During the month of September, the Okaloosa County School District is excited join the Nation in celebrating America’s Founding Fathers George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, John Jay, and Alexander Hamilton.

Schools across the District will honor Patriot Day on September 11th with remembrance ceremonies, patriotic pep rallies, lunches with first responders and members of the military, and lessons about September 11th, 2001 in homeroom classes. New this year, middle school students enrolled in Civics Education, and high school students enrolled in United States Government will receive at least 45 minutes of instruction on 9/11 Heroes’ Day involving the history and significance of September 11, 2001.

September 17th is Constitution Day, a day in which the students in Okaloosa County will observe the importance of the Constitution 236 years after the delegates of the Constitutional Convention met for the first time to sign the document.  Students will learn about the Constitution and the importance of this document to our nation’s history and the freedoms we appreciate today. We will observe Constitution Day on Friday, September 15th.

During Celebrate Freedom Week, which is the last full week of classes in September (Sept. 25-29), students will recite the Preamble of the Constitution at the beginning of each day.  Teachers will integrate resources from the National Archives and Library of Congress to enhance understanding of the role of the Declaration of Independence on the founding of our nation.
