Okaloosa County Elementary Students Compete in Inaugural Districtwide Cross Country Championship

Elementary students from across Okaloosa County traded their classroom desks for running shoes this week as the Okaloosa County School District hosted its inaugural Intramural Cross Country Championship Meet, bringing together top fourth- and fifth-grade runners from schools throughout the North, Central, and South Zones. The two-day event took place November 2 and 3, with Central and South Zone students competing Monday at the Twin Oaks/Mullet Festival site in Niceville and North Zone students taking to the course Tuesday at Blackwater Golf Course in Crestview.

Each participating elementary school was represented by its top student runners in the fourth- and fifth-grade divisions. Students competed in separate boys' and girls' races, with the top 10 finishers in each race earning medals in recognition of their accomplishments. The inaugural competition also recognized zone team champions. Plew Elementary School swept both the boys' and girls' divisions in the Central Zone, while Elliott Point Elementary School claimed both championships in the South Zone. In the North Zone, Pineview School earned the boys' championship, while Antioch Elementary School took home the girls' title.

Beyond the medals and team titles, the championship provided students with an opportunity to demonstrate the values that extend well beyond the finish line, including perseverance, resilience, determination, and sportsmanship. "Events like these are about much more than competition," said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. "They give students opportunities to challenge themselves, set goals, overcome obstacles, celebrate achievement, and build relationships beyond the classroom. We are proud of every student who participated and represented their schools so well.”

The impact extended to the families and community members who came out to cheer on the young athletes. "This event was a wonderful opportunity for our children to participate in some healthy competition and outdoor fun! It was equally rewarding being on the spectator side to see our community come together to encourage and cheer on our children. I'm very grateful that my daughter had this opportunity, as it will no doubt be a highlight of her elementary years," said Christy Geldert, an Edge Elementary School parent. A special thank you goes to the district's dedicated physical education teachers and committee members whose planning and commitment brought the inaugural event to life. Their efforts created a memorable experience for students and established a foundation for what the district hopes will become a lasting elementary athletics tradition.
