The Month of the Military Child (MOMC) in Florida gives communities an opportunity to emphasize and recognize the sacrifices of military children while their parents serve our nation. Florida is committed to being the most military-friendly state in the Nation. Established by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in 1986, MOMC serves as a reminder that military children play a role in contributing to the strength of military families. There are currently 1.2 million children of active-duty members and two million military children have experienced a parent’s deployment since 9/11.
We invite you to wear purple throughout the month of April and to “Purple Up!” on April 17, 2024, as a visible way to show support and thank military children. The color purple symbolizes all branches of the military as it is a combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine Corps red, and Navy blue. We encourage everyone to participate in school events and celebrations that applaud the courage of military children and honor their hard work.
As a Purple Star Campus of Distinction, the Okaloosa County School District is committed to being military-friendly by supporting the unique needs of military families, helping military-connected students to develop the necessary resiliency skills, and providing resources for military-connected students when transitioning to a new school environment. Visit Military Family Resources for more information and resources.
