The History of Silver Sands School

In 1953, a group of parents organized for the purpose of educating their children with special needs. Because of their fundraising efforts, the first wing of the present structure was constructed. The next phase was completed in 1970 and the third in 1972. The final phase of the main building was added in 1981, which includes a gymnasium and stage area. The track and swimming pool rounded out the facility to offer recreational and leisure activities for all students and numerous community members.

The Okaloosa County School Board assumed the operation of Silver Sands School during the 1960-1961 school year.

The next addition included 6 classrooms, which includes the High School and Post Graduate Programs. One of the rooms includes a kitchen for students to learn life skills and cooking.

In August 2023 (thanks to the half-cent sales tax), a four-classroom addition was added to replace 3 portables that were on campus. Each classroom has it's own restroom, office space, sensory room, and one classroom has a kitchen area. A laundry facility is also be accessible to everyone from the outside of the building. Additionally, a new parking area was added on Holmes Blvd for parents and visitors and the track was fully repaved.
