Five individuals stand indoors in front of a Cox Communications backdrop, holding a large ceremonial check from Cox Charities made out to the Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation for $10,000 (dated 2026). The group is positioned in a well-lit room with a light-colored paneled wall, and the check prominently displays “Cox Charities,” “Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation,” and “Ten Thousand and 0/100 Dollars.”

The Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation is proud to announce that it has been selected as a 2026 Cox Charities grant recipient—an honor made possible through the generous support of Cox Communications employees. This $10,000 award will directly impact nearly 1,000 third- and fifth-grade students across six Okaloosa County schools, opening the door to meaningful, hands-on environmental learning experiences.

Through a collaborative partnership with the Okaloosa County School District and the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA), the grant will support the Grasses in Classes program—a proven, place-based education initiative designed to connect students with their local environment. Through this immersive program, students will take on the role of “watershed stewards,” developing a deeper understanding of conservation while actively contributing to the health of their community.

The Grasses in Classes program blends STEM education with real-world application. Students cultivate and plant native grasses that help restore shoreline habitats along Choctawhatchee Bay. These efforts play a vital role in improving water quality by naturally filtering pollutants, reducing shoreline erosion, and strengthening local ecosystems.

Beyond environmental benefits, the program ensures equitable access to engaging STEM learning experiences. Every participating student will have the opportunity to work hands-on with environmental science concepts, building skills that inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong commitment to conservation.

“This grant represents an incredible investment in both our students and our environment,” said program partners. “By empowering young learners to take an active role in protecting our natural resources, we are helping to shape future leaders who understand the importance of sustainability.”

A special thank you is extended to Paula Rogers of Out of the Envelope Grants for her exceptional work in securing this opportunity, as well as to Cox Charities and Cox Communications employees whose generosity continues to make a lasting difference.

The Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation looks forward to seeing these young “watershed stewards” in action—restoring habitats, protecting waterways, and making a real impact in our community for years to come.
