Celebrating Black History Month through the Arts!

Thanks to our amazing art teacher, Michelle Slater, and our incredible music teacher, Jamie Hayes, Destin Elementary kids are learning about black history this month through the arts!
Throughout the month of February in Art and Music class we have been celebrating Black History Month. In Art we focused on the famous collagist, Romare Bearden. By exploring his works of art we focused on building collage scenes and the students were able to create their own interpretation. In Music we have been learning about famous jazz musicians who have made such an important impact on our culture, such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Chuck Barry and even Romare Bearden who collaborated with Dizzie Gillespie. We even played xylophone along with Louis Armstrong’ “When the Saints go Marching In”!
