This year's, Celebrate Literacy Week, is themed Believe In Your “Shelf” – Building Resiliency Through Reading! Mark your calendars for the following exciting Edwins Elementary School activities:
Monday, January 22 - Let’s Read! Bingo
- Complete one activity from the Bingo Board with your class to kick off the week.
- Search for Academic Word Water Rocks in your classroom or recess
Tuesday, January 23 - Read My Shirt Day
- Teachers and students are encouraged to wear shirts with words.
- Resourceful Read Aloud - Read a Math Read aloud book to your class
Wednesday, January 24 - 100th Day of School Activities
- Examples Include:
- Sight Word Power - Pull out 100 sight word cards and read them together, placing them in groups of ten.
- Phonics Fun - Write out the five vowels twice – once for short vowels and again for long vowels. Then, as a class, think of ten words for each vowel.
- Check the Reading Log. Do you keep a class reading log of books you’ve read aloud? Review it together and count how many you’ve read in 100 days.
- Ten x Ten - Pull ten short 1-10 counting books from the library and read them aloud, perhaps spaced throughout the day. Draw on the board to illustrate that 100 comprises ten groups of ten.
- Read All About It - Read a story about the 100th Day of School
- Math - How would you spend $100?
- Students can dress up like a 100-year-old person
Thursday, January 25 - Let's Hunt for a Good Book!
- Wear Camouflage and hut for a good book in your classroom or library.
- Review Book Protocol: How do you pick out a good book?
Friday, January 26 - Glow in the Dark
- Students can bring flashlights/glow sticks to read for 100 minutes.
- Bring a Pillow/Blanket to read in a comfortable spot
